Gentle, Judgment-Free Care

Overcoming Dental Fear and Anxiety

If the thought of the dentist makes your stomach tighten, you are welcome here, and we will take very good care of you.

Love To Smile Dentistry

If you feel nervous, anxious, or even a little panicked about going to the dentist, please know two things. You are not alone, and there is absolutely no judgment here. A lot of the patients we care for once put off dental visits for years, and they will tell you the same thing after their first appointment with us: it was so much easier than they feared. Our whole team is trained to slow down, listen, and help you feel safe from the moment you walk in.

You Are Not Alone, and There Is No Judgment Here

Dental anxiety is far more common than most people realize. Maybe a visit went badly when you were young, maybe you were made to feel embarrassed about your teeth, or maybe you simply do not like feeling out of control while someone works in your mouth. Whatever brought you here, your feelings make sense, and we take them seriously.

You will never get a lecture or a raised eyebrow from us about how long it has been or what your teeth look like right now. We meet you exactly where you are and build a plan from there. Our job is to earn your trust one gentle step at a time, not to make you feel bad.

How We Help You Feel Safe

The biggest fear for most anxious patients is the unknown, so we take the mystery out of every visit. We explain what we are about to do before we do it, we check in with you often, and we go at your pace, not ours. Nothing happens by surprise, and you are always in control.

We also agree on a simple signal, like raising your hand, that means please pause. When you use it, we stop right away, no questions asked. Knowing you can hit the brakes at any moment is often all it takes to let your shoulders relax.

Sedation Options for a Calmer Visit

If you would feel better with a little help staying calm, you have options. Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed in through a small mask and gives a light, relaxed, floating feeling. It wears off within minutes after we remove the mask, so most people drive themselves home and get back to their day.

For deeper anxiety or longer appointments, we also offer oral conscious sedation, a prescribed medication you take before your visit that leaves you very relaxed and drowsy while you stay awake and responsive. One of our doctors will review your health history and talk through which option fits you best, so you can choose what feels right.

Comfort Menu and Gentle Numbing

Comfort is not an afterthought here, it is built into the visit. Our Comfort Menu lets you add the little touches that help you settle in, so you can arrive dreading the chair and leave surprised at how at ease you felt.

When numbing is needed, we take our time and do it gently. We use a topical to numb the surface first, then go slow and steady, so most patients tell us they barely felt a thing. Feeling comfortable and truly numb before we begin is the whole point, and we will not rush that part.

Why Waiting Usually Makes Things Harder

We understand the urge to put it off, but avoiding the dentist tends to make small problems grow into bigger ones. A tiny cavity caught early is a quick, simple fix. Left alone, that same spot can turn into a toothache, an infection, or a tooth that needs much more involved care.

Getting ahead of problems while they are small usually means less time in the chair, more comfortable visits, and better value for you over the long run. The kindest thing you can do for the nervous version of yourself is to come in before a small issue becomes an urgent one. We will make that first step as easy as we possibly can.

Tell Us What You Need So We Can Tailor Your Visit

You do not have to hide your nerves from us. In fact, the more you share, the better we can care for you. Tell us what has felt scary in the past, whether it was a specific sound, a gag reflex, feeling rushed, or not knowing what was happening. Let us know if you would like extra breaks, a slower pace, or a full explanation of each step.

It also helps to know the signs of dental anxiety in yourself, so you can name them for us. Trouble sleeping the night before, a racing heart in the waiting room, feeling sick to your stomach, or canceling appointments at the last minute are all common. None of it is silly, and all of it is something we can work with once we know.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

I have avoided the dentist for years. Will you judge me?

Not for a second. We hear this all the time, and we are genuinely glad you are here now rather than focused on the past. There is no lecture and no shame, just a caring team ready to help you move forward one comfortable step at a time.

What is the difference between laughing gas and oral sedation?

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask for a light, relaxed feeling, and it wears off within minutes so most people drive themselves home. Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed medication you take beforehand that leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy while still awake. Your doctor will help you choose the option that fits your health and your comfort level.

Will the numbing shot hurt?

We work hard to make sure it does not. We numb the surface with a topical gel first, then go slow and gentle, so most patients say they barely felt anything. Feeling truly comfortable before we start is the whole goal, and we will never rush it.

Can I stop the appointment if I get overwhelmed?

Absolutely, and you are always in control. We agree on a simple signal, like raising your hand, that tells us to pause, and when you use it we stop right away. Knowing you can take a break anytime helps a lot of people relax before we even begin.

How do I know if what I feel is really dental anxiety?

Common signs include trouble sleeping the night before, a racing heart in the waiting room, feeling sick to your stomach, or repeatedly canceling appointments. If any of that sounds like you, you are describing dental anxiety, and it is very common. The good news is that it is something we know how to work with once you tell us.

What should I tell you before my visit?

Share anything that has felt scary before, like a certain sound, a gag reflex, or feeling rushed, and let us know if you would like extra breaks or a slower pace. The more we know, the better we can tailor your visit. You can call our Overland Park office at 913-491-1200 or our Peculiar office at 816-620-2022 and simply tell us you get nervous, and we will take it from there.
