It doesn’t matter what stage of life you are in or what you do for a living, the decision to get braces is one that is worth taking some time to consider. Not so much because you need to evaluate the value of braces for helping you to get straighter, healthier teeth that you can feel confident in, but because it’s important that you determine whether traditional braces are the right choice for you.
There are of course benefits to choosing traditional braces, however, many people — especially established working professionals who now have the resources and insurance to correct their teeth — also like to consider the benefits of alternative options such as the Invisalign® clear braces option.
At Love To Smile in Overland Park, we work with adults, teenagers, and families to help you select the style of braces that are right for your needs. It’s all part of our commitment to excellence in family dentistry and orthodontics.
In today’s blog, we will take a look at five of the reasons why clear braces, specifically Invisalign® braces, are so popular, and we’ll examine who they might be a good choice for. If you still have questions after reading, or you want to schedule a consultation about braces, a cleaning, or another family dental service, call us, or contact us online to make an appointment at the location nearest to you.
Invisalign® Is Discreet
It should be no surprise that at Love To Smile family dentistry in Overland Park, we love to see people smile. And, that is one of the reasons why we end up recommending Invisalign® clear braces to so many of our patients.
Sadly, not everyone loves their smile. It’s something that we find especially common among teens and adults who are considering braces. Because of their lack of confidence about how their teeth look, it’s not uncommon that the last thing they feel comfortable with is the thought that something might draw more attention to their mouth.
While this is a tough thing for us to see people struggle with, we understand that a more discreet option than traditional braces might be one of the most important elements of your decision-making process when considering braces.
Invisalign® is a great choice in many of these situations as these braces provide a less noticeable option for self-conscious patients or those who may feel that traditional braces won’t fit well into the image they require as a professional, for whatever reason.
Invisalign® Is Comfortable
While traditional braces are very effective, one of the frustrations that people have with them is the discomfort that can come from regular tightenings, the way that rubber bands can rub against the inside of some people’s mouths, and the almost inevitable experience that a wire will poke you and cause irritation at some point or another.
And while all of these conditions are temporary and easily addressed by your dentist or some ibuprofen, many dentists recommend Invisalign® clear braces to patients who are concerned primarily about comfort.
By no means are Invisalign® braces perfectly comfortable — as a matter of fact, you’ll actually experience slight discomfort more often as you change your Invisalign® Aligners every few weeks as opposed to roughly every other month with traditional braces. However, the adjustments are typically less drastic and, therefore, provide a less intense sense of discomfort according to many dental professionals and patients.
Additionally, Invisalign® can be taken out while you eat, clean your teeth, and even briefly if you are feeling discomfort. Typically, the recommendation is that you wear your Aligners for at least 20 hours a day, but that is still a lot more freedom and flexibility than with standard braces.
Invisalign® Can Help Correct Lots of Different Dental Problems
When it comes to the types of dental corrections that Invisalign® can handle, you’re likely going to be surprised that they can do most jobs that traditional braces do. Although certain severe cases may disqualify you for Invisalign® braces, crowded teeth, overbite, and crossbite are usually able to be addressed with this product.
- Crowded Teeth – The condition known as crowded teeth occurs when there just isn’t enough room in your mouth for your teeth to come in straight and naturally. Lots of people deal with this to some degree. Instead, teeth can overlap, shift sideways, or in some severe cases, fully overlap one another.
- Overbite – Overbite is another common type of cosmetic dentistry concern that we see regularly here at Love To Smile. When your upper teeth extend past your lower teeth, you have an overbite. Severe overbites can cause jaw and mouth pain but are typically correctable with Invisalign braces.
- Underbite – The opposite of the overbite, an underbite is when your lower teeth protrude out past your upper teeth. Underbites can be the results of an overextended jaw bone and can cause wear on your front upper teeth, speech difficulties, and chewing pain. A severe case of underbite may require multiple treatment types or even surgery, and as such, Invisalign® Aligners are not always the best choice for this type of correction.
- Crossbite – Crossbite is a condition where your upper teeth sit inside of, rather than outside of, your lower teeth. This can cause stress on your teeth that lead to receding gums, but can typically be addressed with Invisalign® braces.
Invisalign® Braves Are Easy To Care For
Another great benefit of Invisalign® braces is the ease with which they can be cleaned. As we mentioned above, this teeth-straightening solution is removable, unlike traditional braces. That means that when it’s time to brush your teeth, you can also take a few moments to clean your Aligners.
Furthermore, the ability to take out your Invisalign® braces means that you won’t gunk them up at mealtimes — a common complaint of traditional braces users who find bread, meats, and cheeses to be particularly susceptible to lodging in between teeth and wires.
You’ll also never need to worry about them getting worn down and dirty over time from use as you will receive new Aligners every two to four weeks on average.
Invisalign® Offers Relatively Fast Results
We want to start this one with a quick note of caution about the speed of re-aligning your teeth and correcting conditions like overbite and crossbite. No matter how good a product is, shifting the placement of teeth in your mouth is a sensitive process that, if rushed, can actually result in weak roots, loose teeth, and lots of problems in your dental future. As such, you should always be wary of any solution that offers the smile of your dreams in 6 months’ time.
Now, with that being said, Invisalign® treatments tend to be faster than the average time of treatment with traditional braces. In fairness, some of this is due to the fact that traditional braces are a better solution for more severe conditions and thereby have a higher likelihood of being used in longer treatment programs.
While the typical treatment duration for traditional braces averages in the range of 18 – 24 months, Invisalign® braces treatments tend to have an average duration in the range of 12 – 18 months — roughly three-quarters of the time of traditional braces.
For people looking for corrections on a deadline for a life event such as a marriage, graduation, or another momentous occasion where you want your smile at your best, Invisalign® may prove a faster option.
