Ideally, you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day (in the morning and before bed), you are flossing, and you are protecting your teeth when needed, such as wearing a mouthguard when playing contact sports. You are doing everything you can to have good oral health care. So when it comes to the toothbrush you use (which plays such an integral role in the health of your teeth), how do you know you have chosen the right one for you?

Love to Smile is a general dentistry practice that offers a wide range of dental services, including dental implants, preventative dental care, teeth whitening, fillings and more. We have three locations to better serve you, including in Overland Park, Peculiar, and Lenexa. We are passionate about offering the best possible dental care for the entire family. Below, we’ll go over some tips on how to pick out the right toothbrush for you. Contact us to learn more and schedule a dental appointment today!

The Size of the Toothbrush

While brushing your teeth does not take that long out of your day, it is a task that many do not enjoy doing. To help make brushing your teeth not such a chore, our local dentists recommend that you choose a toothbrush that fits into your mouth comfortably. This is especially true for kids’ toothbrushes. Since kids are constantly growing, the size of their mouth is, too. Spend some time finding the right size toothbrush for them so it’s comfortable and easy to use. For adults, you want a toothbrush that will ideally cover two teeth at the same time while you brush.

Soft Bristles

It is almost universally recommended by dentists these days that you brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Many people mistakenly believe that a hard-bristled toothbrush will more effectively remove plaque and tartar. This is not the case. In fact, too hard of a bristled toothbrush can actually damage your gum line, resulting in recession, and cause your gums to bleed. Soft bristles do the same job as hard bristles, but without harming your teeth.

Rounded Bristles

You probably have never thought about the shape of your toothbrush head. In fact, when you were a kid, all the toothbrushes probably looked much the same. However, the shape of your toothbrush head does make a difference in your overall oral health. When you’re in the toothbrush aisle, you’ll notice that toothbrush heads come in round or straight (like a rectangle) heads. The toothbrush with the straight edges could be damaging your gums by cutting them. This could contribute to recession, infections, and inflammation over time. Rounded bristles, on the other hand, help protect your teeth from these hazards of brushing them on a regular basis, and are the preferred type of toothbrush head recommended for those with sensitive teeth.

Electric or Manual Toothbrush?

When properly used, both an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush get the job done. Both are great at removing food from your teeth and helping keep the bad bacteria at bay. Thus, Love to Smiles does not have a strong preference either way. It truly comes down to which type of toothbrush you will use. We understand how easy it is to forget to brush, which is the most important thing. If you love the idea of flipping a switch and letting the toothbrush do the work for you, then invest in an electric toothbrush. If you love the control a manual toothbrush brings (and the cool designs!), give that type of toothbrush a whirl. Whatever works for you, works for us.

ADA Seal of Approval

The American Dental Association (ADA) is a professional association of dentists that helps dentists succeed and advance oral health care. Founded in 1859, it’s the world’s largest and oldest association for dentistry. The ADA has been testing and certifying dental products since 1931. It boasts rigorous guidelines for the testing and approval of dentistry products in order to ensure dental patients are getting the best and the safest products available.

Thus, if you buy a toothbrush that has an ADA seal of approval, you’ll know that the toothbrush met all of the requirements for a safe and thorough cleaning. The ADA approves both manual and electric toothbrushes, ensuring the bristles are safe, sturdy, won’t fall out, and helps reduce plaque and ward off gum disease. For replaceable toothbrush heads, those are tested as well to ensure they are safe for gums and teeth.
